To get supercharged returns, you'd have done far better with a painting by Ram Kumar. A 6-foot-by-4-foot oil that sold for $32,000 in 2003 might fetch $500,000 today -- a 1,462% run up.<br /><br />It further says that, now, a robust economy, a new moneyed class, and the energetic participation of young expert Indians are boosting sales of contemporary Indian art to new highs. In the past years, investors have started "art funds" in which a curator buys and sells artworks instead of stocks. Premium economic dailies has even published an "art index" aggregating prices for works by 51 top artists.<br /><br />The excitement the new market is generating was palpable at the art galleries . Where works of India's contemporary masters like Krishna Howalji Ara, Jogen Chowdhury, Maqbool Fida Husain, Sayed Haider Raza , Francis Newton ,Tyeb Mehta started anywhere from $100,000 to $700,000.<br /><br />Prices for art have tripled across the board. At a Christie's auction in London last September, the hammer came down on Tyeb Mehta's Mahisasura for $1.6 million. Since then, at least a half-dozen works by contemporary Indian masters have sold for $1 million-plus.<br /><br />Last year MF Hussain landed into a controversy when an industrialist Guru Swarup commissioned him some 125 paintings on ‘EARTH’ series in a year for which Hussain was paid by him a hefty amount of 100 crores.<br />Today, Indians both at home and abroad believe investing in art can be as profitable as the stock market .With prices soaring, art lovers are predicting a shakeout. After the sell-off Bombay's stock market has seen in the past week, some fear prices for art will follow. For gallery owners , “Like the stock market, it's a guessing game." Every one astonished. From artist to buyer. From a gallery owner to a common reader. For every one .Prices are "beyond recognition."Though there are some fears like artists may be sacrificing quality for quantity or given the growing demand, some artists have become painting factories or potential dangers of fake.<br /><br />The massage is clearly written on the wall- "Today, people aren't buying art out of conviction or pleasure, but because they see money in it,".<br /><br />As far as ‘Resale value’ is concerned Indian art has touched its western counterpart. Indian art becoming global. But it’s just the tip of the vast iceberg called contemporary art in India where millions of artists still submerged into the turbulent water of obscurity, confusion and professional insecurity.<br />However the artists who are in limelight are ‘successful’ because they are fortunate enough that their works suddenly transformed into a share of premium blue-chip company. But what will come next? Art factories, Assembly line art production units…Out sourcing??<br /><br /><br />ART MOVEMENTS<br /><br />As a matter of fact the art scenario is hijacked by the art speculators and art has lost all the roots from its soil and purpose – the society.<br /><br />To redefine the term art , Its purpose ,social relevance and keeping it strictly the matter of artists, time and again art movements has happened in the West.<br />For western societies the history of the art movement is too much closely associated with the social up and downs and every movement has its own social necessity. Where every new concept originated from the critique of the older one and ends up as a critique of the newer one.<br /><br />Critique could be on the basis of the concept, on the basis of the technique or on the basis of the political economy. For example,<br />Abstract art which is generally understood to mean art that does not depict objects in the natural world .In the very early 20th century, the term was more often used to describe art, such as Cubist and Futurist art, that depicts real forms in a simplified or rather reduced way—keeping only an allusion of the original natural subject. Such paintings were often claimed to capture something of the depicted objects' immutable intrinsic qualities rather than its external appearance.<br /><br />Constructivism (1915) and De Stijl (1917) were parallel movements which took abstraction into the three dimensions of sculpture and architecture. The Constructivists believed that the artist's work was a revolutionary activity, to express the aspirations of the people, using machine production, graphic and photographic means of communication.Jackson Pollock's dripping paint onto a canvas laid on the floor is a technique that has its roots in the work of Max Ernst.<br /><br />The movement's name is derived from the combination of the emotional intensity and self-denial of the German Expressionists with the anti-figurative aesthetic of the European abstract schools such as Futurism, the Bauhaus and Synthetic Cubism. Additionally, it has an image of being rebellious, anarchic, highly idiosyncratic and, some feel, rather nihilistic.<br /><br />Why this style gained mainstream acceptance in the 1950s is a matter of debate. American social realism had been the mainstream in the 1930s. It had been influenced not only by the Great Depression but also by the Social Realists of Mexico such as David Alfaro Siqueiros and Diego Rivera. The political climate after World War II did not long tolerate the social protests of these painters. Abstract expressionism arose during World War II and began to be showcased during the early forties at galleries in New York. The McCarthy era after World War II was a time of extreme artistic censorship in the United States. Since the subject matter was often totally abstract it became a safe strategy for artists to pursue this style.<br /><br />However, since mid 1970s it has been argued by some historians that the style attracted the attention, in the early 1950s, of the CIA, who saw it as a representative of the USA as a haven of free thought and free markets, as well as a challenge to both the socialist realist styles prevalent in communist nations and the dominance of the European art markets.<br /><br />If the artists of the Abstract art movement were challenging the authorities with their technique, another art movement , the Outsider Art, has challenged the very intellectual setup of the society .<br /><br />The term Outsider Art was coined by art critic Roger Cardinal in 1972 as an English synonym for Art Brut (which literally translates as "Raw Art" or "Rough Art"), a label created by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture; Dubuffet focused particularly on art by insane asylum inmates.<br /><br />While Dubuffet's term is quite specific, the English term "Outsider Art" is often applied more broadly, to include certain self-taught or Naïve art makers who were never institutionalized. Typically, those labeled as Outsider Artists have little or no contact with the institutions of the mainstream art world; in many cases, their work is "discovered" only after their deaths. Much Outsider Art illustrates extreme mental states, unconventional ideas, or elaborate fantasy worlds.<br /><br />The interest in "outsider" practices among twentieth century artists and critics can be seen as part of a larger emphasis on the rejection of established values within the modernist art milieu. The early part of the 20th Century gave rise to cubism and the Dada Constructivist and Futurist movements in art, all of which involved a dramatic movement away from cultural forms of the past.<br /><br />Dadaist Marcel Duchamp, for example, abandoned "painterly" technique to allow chance operations a role in determining the form of his works, or simply to re-conceptualize existing "readymade" objects as art. Mid-century artists, including Pablo Picasso, looked "outside" the traditions of high culture for inspiration, drawing from the artifacts of "primitive" societies, the unschooled artwork of children, and vulgar advertising graphics. Dubuffet's championing of the art of the insane and others at the margins of society is yet another example of avant-garde art challenging established cultural values.<br /><br />The artists of Arte Povera movement (Italian for poor art) based in Turin, Milan, Genoa and Rome, which was introduced by the Italian art critic and curator, Germano Celant, in 1967, would use any medium they could get for free or very, very cheap. Sticks, rocks, slate, rope and iron were common materials in the artist's artworks. The term "Poor Art" is not an attack on the artists, but rather a reference that any poor man or woman could get involved.<br /><br />They were working in radically new ways, breaking with the past and entering a challenging dialogue with trends in Europe and America. The artists<br />The movement was particularly influential during the early 1970s in countries with large Italian migrant populations, such as Australia where major local practitioners included John Davis and Domenico De clario.<br /><br />VOYAGES OF WESTERN ART<br /><br />Western art scenario has taken its present shape by going through a long voyages like--<br /><br />Minimalism which describes movements in various forms of art and design, especially visual art and music, where the work is stripped down to its most fundamental features.It is rooted in the reductive aspects of Modernism, and is often interpreted as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism.<br /><br />Lyrical Abstraction,an American abstract art movement that emerged in New York City, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, and then Toronto and London during the 1960s - 1970s. This along with the Fluxus movement and Postminimalism sought to expand the boundaries of abstract painting and Minimalism by focusing on process, new materials and new ways of expression.<br /><br />Neo-expressionism was a style of modern painting that emerged in the late 1970s and dominated the art market until the mid-1980s. Related to American Lyrical Abstraction it developed in Europe as a reaction against the conceptual and minimalistic art of the 1970s. Neo-expressionists returned to portraying recognizable objects, such as the human body (although sometimes in a virtually abstract manner), in a rough and violently emotional way using vivid colours and banal colour harmonies.<br /><br />Through these movements there has been a continuous search of the interrelation in-between the artwork and the artist for eg.<br />The members of New Realism, saw the world as an image, from which they would take parts and incorporate them into their works. They sought to bring life and art closer together. These artists declared that they had come together on the basis of a new awareness of their "collective singularity", meaning that they were together in spite of, or perhaps because of, their differences.<br /><br />They advocated a return to "reality," in opposition with the lyricism of abstract painting,. They used exterior objects to give an account of the reality of their time. They were the inventor of the décollage technique (the opposite of collages), in particular through the use of lacerated posters. Often these artists worked collaboratively and it was their intention to present their artworks in the city of Paris anonymously.<br /><br />The New Realism movement has often been compared to the Pop Art movement in New York for their use and critique of mass-produced commercial objects (Villeglé's ripped cinema posters, Arman's collections of detritus and trash), although New Realism maintained closer ties with Dada than with Pop Art.<br /><br />In 1950s ,to make more and more mass participation ,Pop art movement has emerged in Britain and in parallel in the late 1950s in the United States. Pop art is one of the major art movements of the twentieth century. Characterized by themes and techniques drawn from popular mass culture, such as advertising and comic books, pop art is widely interpreted as either a reaction to the then-dominant ideas of abstract expressionism or an expansion upon them. Pop art, like pop music, aimed to employ images of popular as opposed to elitist culture in art, emphasizing the banal or kitschy elements of any given culture. Pop art at times targeted a broad audience, and often claimed to do so.<br /><br />While pop art and Dadaism explored some of the same subjects, pop art replaced the destructive, satirical, and anarchic impulses of the Dada movement with detached affirmation of the artifacts of mass culture.<br /><br />The challenges which comes before the artist and the art movements is not limited from the insiders but time and again the outsider challenge happens to be so prominent that it has changed the very course of a movement and the Soviet state is one of its finest example. The ‘Do and Don’t’ prescribed by the state has changed the course of the art movement in the Russia after the revolution days .<br /><br />‘Officially approved’ art<br /><br />Officially approved art was required to follow the doctrine of Socialist Realism.<br />Roses for Stalin (1949)One of the best known official Soviet artists was Aleksandr Gerasimov. During his career he produced a large number of heroic paintings of Stalin and other members of the Politburo. Nikita Khrushchev later alleged that Kliment Voroshilov spent more time posing in Gerasimov's studio than he did attending to his duties in the People's Commissariat of Defense. Gerasimov's painting shows a mastery of classical representational techniques.<br /><br />The death of Stalin in 1953, and Nikita Khrushchev's Thaw, paved the way for a wave of liberalization in the arts throughout the Soviet Union. Although no official change in policy took place, artists began to feel free to experiment in their work, with considerably less fear of repercussions than during the Stalinist period.<br />In the 1950s Moscow artist Eli Beliutin encouraged his students to experiment with abstractionism, a practice thoroughly discouraged by the Artists' Union, which strictly enforced the official policy of Socialist Realism. Artists who chose to paint in alternative styles had to do so completely in private and were never able to exhibit or sell their work. As a result, Nonconformist Art developed along a separate path than the Official Art that was recorded in the history books.<br /><br />Unfortunately, the history of late Soviet art has been dominated by politics and simplistic formulae. Both within the artworld and the general public, very little consideration has been given to the aesthetic character of the work produced in the USSR in the 1970s and 1980s. Instead, the official and unofficial art of the period usually stood in for either "bad" or "good" political developments.<br /><br />The most infamous incident regarding nonconformist artists in the former Soviet Union was the 1974 Bulldozer Exhibition, which took place in a park just outside of Moscow, and included work by such artists as Oskar Rabin, Komar and Melamid, Alexandr Zhdanov, and Leonid Sokov. The artists involved had written to the authorities for permission to hold the exhibition but received no answer to their request. They decided to go ahead with the exhibition anyway, which consisted solely of unofficial works of art that did not fit into the rubric of Socialist Realism. The KGB put an end to the exhibition just hours after it opened by bringing in bulldozers to completely destroy all of the artworks present. Fortunately for the artists, the foreign press had been there to witness the event. The world-wide coverage of it forced the authorities to permit an exhibition of Nonconformist Art two weeks later in Izmailovsky Park in Moscow.<br />By the 1980s, Gorbachev's policies of Perestroika and Glasnost made it virtually impossible for the authorities to place restrictions on artists or their freedom of expression. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the new market economy enabled the development of a gallery system, which meant that artists no longer had to be employed by the state, and could create work according to their own tastes, as well as the tastes of their private patrons. Consequently, after around 1986 the phenomenon of Nonconformist Art in the Soviet Union ceased to exist.<br /><br />In the western artworld one can see a gradual making of the individual as the central character . In the movement of Artists' books (also called bookworks) there are works of art realized in the form of a book. They are usually published in small editions, though sometimes they are one-of-a-kind objects. Artists' books have employed a wide range of forms, including scrolls, fold-outs or loose items contained in a box.Although artists have been active in printing and book production for centuries, the artist's book is primarily a 20th century form.Inexpensive artists' books were an important part of several avant-garde practices that attempted to democratize access to art. The Dada and surrealist movements in the early decades of the 20th century produced an explosion of experimental publications by artists, as did Futurism and Russian Constructivism<br />In the early 1970s the artist's book began to be recognized as a distinct genre, and with this recognition came the beginnings of critical appreciation of and debate on the subject.<br /><br />Artists has experimented with their body from which the term Body Art is arrived.In Complex Kadakali makeup is a form of body art Body art is art made on, with, or consisting of, the human body. The most common forms of body art are tattoos and body piercings, but other types include scarification, branding, scalpelling, shaping (for example tight-lacing of corsets), full body tattoo and body painting.<br />More extreme body art can involve things such as mutilation or pushing the body to its physical limits. For example, one of Marina Abramovic's works involved dancing until she collapsed from exhaustion, while one of Dennis Oppenheim's better-known works saw him lying in the sunlight with a book on his chest, until his skin, excluding that covered by the book, was badly sunburned. It can even consist of the arrangement and dissection of preserved bodies in an artistic fashion, as in the case of the plastinated bodies used in the travelling Body Worlds exhibit.In Western art, body art appears to be a sub-category of performance art, in which artists use or abuse their own body to make their particular statements.<br /><br />Installation art is another experiment where essentially, installation/environmental art takes into account the viewer’s entire sensory experience, rather than floating framed points of focus on a “neutral” wall or displaying isolated objects (literally) on a pedestal. This leaves space and time as its only dimensional constants. This implies dissolution of the line between art and life; Kaprow noted that “if we bypass ‘art’ and take nature itself as a model or point of departure, we may be able to devise a different kind of art… out of the sensory stuff of ordinary life” .<br /><br />INDIAN EXPERIENCE<br /><br />In India the inheritance of art , like any creative thing has two distinct streams running parallel to each other namely ,The mainstream and the popular stream. The former one has always been patronized by the King/Court or the state and the later one is the form of expression of the mass which is often termed as ‘Folk Art’.<br /><br />History of the modern art, in the West, is all about the blurring of the dividing lines in between the artist , artwork and the spectator. In India Modern art is a term which though implemented for a vast arena but it should be seen as a pure western phenomena. At the same time in the Indian context when we talking about the art scenario it is actually the ‘main stream’. Unfortunately ‘ Folk Art’ which is for all intents and purposes a misleading term for the art by the masses has never been into the discourse of the artworld of India.<br /><br />The fall of Moughal empire which subsequently replaced by three hundred years of British colonial rule has stagnated the Indian society and the art scene was also affected, till the ‘Indian Renaissance’. Modernity as an outlook is basically imported in India from the west. The introduction of English as the medium of education which was propagated by Raja Rammohun Roy was like a window for the Indians to look at the developments in the West. The spread of western education and formation of educated civic society of the big cities of Kolkata (erstwhile Calcutta), Chennai (erstwhile Madras) has made the basic groundwork for what is modern Indian art, be it literature, graphic art, performing art etc.<br /><br />It was a time of awakening for the Indian Intellect .Increasing contact with western cultures changed the tastes of the Indian affluent. They wanted their houses and interiors to imitate western models; line their walls with realistic paintings of themselves, their families and entourage. This attracted a large number of European artist professionals to seek their fortunes in Indian courts and principalities in the eighteenth century. This continued till the middle of the nineteenth, when the British government established art schools in certain Indian cities on their own initiative or in response to local demand. Although the initial brief of the art schools was to refine and reorient the existing art practices of the land, they began, often under public pressure, to train local talent to work with European methods and techniques. When the inflow of European professionals stopped, their place was taken by some talented and self-taught Indian professionals like Raja Ravi Varma and others, who had learned to use the technique of oil painting as was current in the west. They were in turn followed by those trained in the art schools. However, realistic painting did not strike deep roots in India, probably for the lack of a confirmed realistic attitude amongst the Indian practitioners. Even at their best they produced delightful hybrids of one sort or another.<br /><br />At the beginning of the century, as the Indian nationalist movement grows, artists contribute visually to the struggle for independence. The naturalistic paintings of Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) lose their popularity. Once hailed for bringing Indian history and Hindu mythology vividly to life, Ravi Varma is now criticized for his European classicism: his style is not Indian. Artists attempt instead to develop a uniquely Indian modern art that differs from European styles of painting. A greater knowledge of India's traditional court, religious, and folk arts leads many to turn to the past for inspiration. In Bengal, the Calcutta Art School replaces its collection of European art with examples of indigenous traditions. The art department at Santiniketan (West Bengal) looks to European modernism and Japanese aesthetics to develop a new Indian art. And artists and cultural leaders from India and Japan attempt to forge a pan-Asian aesthetic. The Bengal School of painting is a leader in artistic developments. Led by Abanindranath Tagore (1871–1951), it turns for inspiration to older Indian art forms such as Mughal miniatures and the ancient paintings at the Ajanta caves.<br /><br />The next transformation comes out of a nationalistic backlash in the early years of the twentieth century. Various circumstances conspired to give it shape. The partition of Bengal in 1905 gave rise to the Swadeshi movement, which in turn generated a strong wave of national self-assertion and revival of interest in the country’s traditional cultural resources and their significant role in shaping further growth. A section of British art lovers and intellectuals also supported this.<br /><br /><br />For instance, E. B. Havell, Principal of Calcutta’s Government School of Arts and Crafts, deplored the government’s disinterest in the traditional art skills of the country and made an effort to indigenise its teaching programme, going out of the way to invite the self-taught genius Abanindranath Tagore to operate it. In the next few years, Abanindranath and his devoted students became the core group of the so-called Neo-Bengal Movement. In 1919, Rabindranath Tagore took away his most resourceful disciple, Nandalal Bose, to Santiniketan to conceive and operate an open-ended art programme in his ‘world university,’ Viswa Bharati.<br /><br /><br />Indian independence is one of the biggest oxymoron of the modern world history because people of a peninsula got independence from the three hundred years of foreign rule at the price of partition, communal riots and unprecedented mass exodus. Before partition they were citizen of a colony . The independence transformed them into the refugees into what was their home land till few days back!!!<br />For the Indian intellect the era of independence was in reality the era of dilemmas and contradiction. If Renaissance was awakening, the riots, famine , refugee problem which comes along with the independence was like shattering of a dream.<br />In the mid-twentieth century, India was a new democratic country carved out of the subcontinent and led by the Indian National Congress. During this nascent period of independence, its citizens sought to define its parameters and understand its reason for being. The cultural sphere was highly politicized. Authors wrote stories and poems that critiqued the way nationalist leaders handled the events leading up to independence and partition of India and Pakistan. Within the burgeoning art scene, artists introduced themselves as modern and secular practitioners. Some were political, while many more were concerned with formal issues. Some incorporated indigenous traditions, while others turned to art practices from outside of India.<br /><br />When India became independent, this was the running scene. It had three categories of art practice — one loyal to western realism, another drawing resource from traditional Indian and Asiatic models, and the third touched by the new experimentalism.<br />Through much of the twentieth century, South Asian artists continue to respond creatively to developments in European art while attempting to make work that is rooted in Indian aesthetics and experiences. In 1947, the Progressive Artists' Group in Bombay is established.<br /><br /><br />The Bombay Progressives<br /><br />During the 1930s and '40s, a number of communist groups were active in the cultural arena in India. Along with theater professionals and writers, visual artists joined together under the banner of "progressive" and identified with Marxism. In Bombay in 1947, Francis Newton Souza (1924–2002), Maqbool Fida Husain (born 1915), and others formed the Progressive Artists' Group. They had leftist leanings, rejected the nationalist art of the Bengal School, and embraced international modern art practices. Husain has also worked in a number of international painting modes; he was exposed to the art of Europeans including Emil Nolde and Oskar Kokoschka through the Progressive Artists' Group. His work, however, retains traces of indigenous traditions; in particular, he has had an ongoing interest in Indian cinema. Husain first supported himself as an artist by painting cinema billboards.<br /><br />The group's inspirations are varied, from Matisse, Picasso, Cubism, and abstraction to everyday life, religious symbolism, and traditional Indian painting. In contrast to trends in the West, figuration remains popular in South Asia throughout the century.<br /><br />Politically, most of South Asia's artists in the twentieth century are secular nationalists, striving for images that will bind, not divide, their nations, particularly in the face of continued communal tension.<br /><br /><br />WINDOW TO WEST<br />During the 1950s and'60s, more artists travel to the West and study there. The discourse on contemporary Indian art focuses—with some anxiety—on dichotomies of past and present, tradition and modernity, India and the West. However, as the Indian and Pakistani diaspora grows, and as more South Asian artists live and create art abroad, these anxieties begin to dissipate. Postmodern hybridity encourages artists to juxtapose diverse sources, often playfully, and with a sense of easy, global proprietorship.<br /><br />This ‘Window To West’ has its own various drawbacks like it has given the artist a new way of expression but it was a kind of grafting of western ethos on the Indian roots . This modernity which was imported from the west did not have its origin neither it was able to grow its roots on the Indian soil . It makes Indian artist more and more dependent on the western galleries , as KG Subramaniyan has noted that, “We have been independent for the last 60 years but we still behave as if we have not. We are not still sure of ourselves. The colonial trauma persists. To get true accreditation, our writers want to win prizes from a foreign land; our artists want to show their works in foreign galleries.”<br /><br />It is the price we are paying for the import of the Modernity from the west in-toto.<br />It has widened the gap in-between the harvest and the soil and slowly it becomes an alien thing in its own land.<br /><br />Sixty year is long time for the life of a person but it’s a very short time for the history. From Nehruvian model of socialism and welfare state to free market economy and from the secular democracy to religious fundamentalism, during past sixty years India swings from one extreme to another but unfortunately the artist community completely failed to<br />assimilate these changes and reflect on their work. This is only because the artworld , the so called Main Stream artworld has long back disassociated itself from the body politic of the society. Main stream artworld has taken refuge into the galleries and at first slowly and now completely surrenders before the speculators. It is an irony that the artist community which ,during the ‘Dull’ time, was reeling under the utter frustration due to the struggle, misery way back to some couple of decades ago is still in frustration in present day ‘boom time’ because now their work is being treated like a commodity and shares by the market speculators.Artist are getting good price of their work but it’s the price they are getting to kill their intellect.<br /><br />Historical development of Western contemporary art has proved that like democracy ,art is also a thing ‘For the society,Of the society and By the society’. Indian artist community has taken techniques , forms form their western counterparts but when it comes to involve the larger society with this form of expression their attitude is still very hostile towards the fellow ‘folk artist’ and rest of the society. This is the main challenge<br />before the Indian contemporary artists and only they have to find a way out.<br /><br />Art is very much part of the society where we live in. It is a very part of the history which we commonly share. It is a very fundamental of our root of identity.
